Tomo Hirata
I work across business, operations and technology, helping turn unclear problems into practical systems.
Who I am
Independent software engineer and technical partner.
Based in Japan and open to remote collaboration with teams internationally.
Why business and technology
The hardest part is often not implementation itself, but understanding what should be solved, why it matters, and how to turn that into something that works in practice.
How I got here
Machine learning research
Research taught me to compare approaches through repeatable experiments rather than trust a single result.
Enterprise systems taught me to understand before changing
Working on long-lived software showed me that implementation decisions depend on existing workflows, architecture and operational constraints.
Search, authentication and production systems
Search depends on more than search logic. Integrations, authentication and existing specifications decide how safely a system can change.
Client-facing discovery, strategy and AI work
This moved my focus upstream, to understanding what should be solved before building. Today I work as an independent technical partner.
What I value
- Understand before building.
- Work from real operational problems.
- Combine technical decisions with implementation.
- Leave systems easier to operate than before.
